MARE MAGNVM: VLTRAMARINI takes the captivating journey of the MARE MAGNVM series into the realm of NFTs, providing a unique and engaging way to experience the continuing odyssey of the masked travelers. MARE MAGNVM introduced us to a cast of characters through a monumental installation featuring 12 looping, projected videos. It immersed us in a monochromatic world and introduced us to the people who were turned into generic archetypes by papier-mâché masks inspired by popular motifs from Ecuador, the artist’s homeland. These characters rode in small boats, looking out into the endless waters with hope and fear, representing not only current and historical waves of migration but also the eternal cycle of humans heading for the horizon. MARE MAGNVM turned the travelers and their journey into an idea, a current running through us.

In MARE MAGNVM: La Llegada (The Arrival), the characters finally reach land, and we see them being processed at a border through 81 medium close-up photographs. These photos give us a sense of the people as individuals while highlighting the inhumanity of their treatment. The photographs bring the harsh realities of migration into stark relief, revealing the new monsters waiting at the border—made of desks, bureaucrats, stigmas, the language of laws, and the lines drawn on maps. If the ocean does not swallow a migrant, these beasts will.

VLTRAMARINI, which means "those beyond the sea," takes us on the next step of this journey, expanding the world of MARE MAGNVM. This limited-edition NFT collection consists of 15 unique images that show the passengers arriving at a coastline. Together, they form a sprawling panorama of their landfall. This moment, fraught with danger but still teeming with triumph, is depicted from various perspectives, showing the variety of experiences tied into the same event. Each NFT provides an exclusive view of the Vltramarini as their ocean voyage ends and a new leg of their quest begins, while also offering a permanent stake in the ongoing MARE MAGNVM saga for its owner.
