Statement

Aware of personal and collective experiences, Peñafiel constructs photographs, videos, and multi-media installations that integrate digital with physical objects, giving ideas and emotions a physical manifestation. Driven by a personal responsibility to communicate and instigate change in today’s society, Peñafiel creates artworks that raise questions on social issues and susceptibility. The social issues explored at the core of his practice are immigration and displacement and their association with fear, injustice, subjugation, perpetuity, relief, and liberty. These effects resonate in the global economy, where the current migration crisis ignited by political and religious persecution heighten inequalities. Disparities in income levels, opportunities, economic security and personal safety, created by corruption and wars lead to illegal migration. Through his work, he opens the dialogue on such issues by presenting different perspectives.
