MARE MAGNVM: NAVIS I
MARE MAGNVM – Navis I is presented as part of Un visionado a tres voces, a collaborative exhibition bringing together video works from the collections of the Museo Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M), the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá (MAC Panamá), and MUNTREF Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Km 0 of BIENALSUR in Buenos Aires. Conceived as a dialogue between institutions operating within different geopolitical contexts of the Global South, the project explores points of convergence and divergence across memory, territory, and landscape.
The title MARE MAGNVM refers to the name given by the Romans to the Mediterranean Sea, positioning the body of water as both historical construct and lived geography. In Navis I, the sea emerges as a charged space of passage, movement, and accumulation, an arena shaped by journeys, migration, and the circulation of bodies across time. The work considers the sea not as a neutral backdrop, but as an active witness to countless lives marked by displacement, survival, and transition.
Presented alongside works by Cristina Lucas and Cristina Mejías at CA2M, Navis I contributes to a collective, polyphonic vision that foregrounds the entanglement of political borders, ecological systems, and human movement. Through a restrained visual language and temporal immersion, the video situates migration within a broader continuum of historical repetition and unresolved passage.
Un visionado a tres voces brings together nine video works that articulate a shared reflection on memory, territory, and landscape, forming a choral structure in which individual narratives coexist within a larger transnational dialogue.
