Run, Run, Run Like the Wind: Correle que te van a matar, 2023
Run Run Like the Wind is a public art installation composed of nine monumental, vividly colored banners that activate 41st Street and the civic space of Henry Liebman Square. Installed during Miami Art Week 2023, the project transforms the street into a site of movement, memory, and collective passage.
The installation draws from Latin American protest songs of the 1960s and 1970s, including Víctor Jara’s El Aparecido and Violeta Parra’s Run Run se fue pa’l norte. These references frame a broader meditation on migration and displacement, tracing the emotional tension between departure and arrival, urgency and uncertainty.
Figures appear across the banners in states of motion—running, carrying luggage, or caught mid-journey. Small wings at their ankles invoke Hermes, the ancient Greek messenger and protector of travelers, suggesting guidance, vulnerability, and transition. Text fragments drawn from song lyrics, idiomatic expressions, and lived experiences of refugees form a multilingual chorus that reflects the recurring nature of forced movement.
Responding to the demographic realities of Miami and South Florida, the languages represented in the work include Spanish, English, and Haitian Creole. As the banners move with the wind, they animate the plaza, mirroring the physical and emotional rhythms of migration—marked by hope, fear, resilience, and persistence.
Originally presented at MOCA North Miami, Run Run Like the Wind was commisioned to be re-designed and presented as part of the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Program, extending its dialogue into the everyday life of the city.
