Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo [I put the sun on my shoulder and the world turns yellow]
Vessel and Veil is a group exhibition featuring works—including photography, assemblage, textile, collage, and video—by Claudia Martínez Garay, Pepe Mar, Edison Peñafiel, Yelaine Rodriguez, and Xaviera Simmons.
Across the exhibition, the body emerges as a central site through which power, history, spirituality, and personal autonomy are negotiated. Bodies appear as politicized and regulated forms, shaped by inherited circumstances and lived experience, carrying the weight of the past while actively participating in the present and future. At times present and at times absent, the body functions as a symbolic stage for assertion, resistance, and survival.
Within this framework, Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo is addressed in the exhibition as a work that unfolds histories of migration through archetypal figures, the mother, the father, the child, the family. These figures speak to both universal migratory experiences and intimate familial narratives. Masks deindividuate the bodies, allowing viewers, regardless of origin, to project their own lineages, memories, and myths onto the figures represented.
The body in the work becomes a site of telling and retelling, a vessel through which stories circulate rather than settle. Migration is not framed as a single event or border crossing, but as a recurring condition marked by movement, loss, endurance, and transmission across generations. Textile and garment operate as conceptual devices that hold memory, negotiate vulnerability, and register the imprint of power on the body.
Vessel and Veil situates Me pongo el sol al hombro y el mundo es amarillo within a broader inquiry into the body as a conduit—one shaped by layered histories and ongoing negotiations of visibility, belonging, and movement.
